Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever is one of many breeds of the retriever hunting type. American Labs were bred for their skills while the English were bred for their looks.  Generally American Labs will be slightly easier to train with a higher level of energy (perfect for runners/very active people).  Labs are currently the most popular dog placed into service due to a perfect combination of high train-ability with a gentle nature.  Generally English Labs will tend to be a bit more sedentary and overall mellow temperaments.  Overall Labs are extremely loyal and intelligent.  Labradors are THE most popular pet breeds in numerous countries, including the United States. While they still serve the purpose for which they were initially bred, which is retrieving small downed waterfowl, they are also adept at a number of other jobs including leading the blind, acting as hearing dogs, and police and military work. Their kind nature, obedience, and knack for getting along with children also gives them the reputation of being the ideal pet.

Low Maintenance: Infrequent grooming is required to maintain upkeep. No trimming or stripping needed.

Moderate and Seasonal Shedding: Routine brushing will help. The FURminator works amazingly well.  USA Purebred Labs is the first to produce Low Shedding Labs!!  Unless you have a low shedding lab, be prepared to vacuum often!  Children who grow up with pets that shed have a 50% less allergy sensitivity during their lifetime than their counterparts.

Easy Training: The Labrador Retriever is known to listen to commands and obey its owner. Expect fewer repetitions when training this breed.

Great Watchdog Ability: This dog will bark and alert its owners when an intruder is present. It is not considered to be a very protective breed. They're unlikely to scare off intruders.

Low Adaptability: It needs regular exercise for apartment living and is best with a large yard or acreage. This breed is able to handle most types of hot and cold weather.

Fairly Active: It will need regular exercise to maintain its fitness. Trips to the dog park are a great idea.  English Labs tend to have calmer temperaments than their American counterparts.

Good for New Owners: This breed is well suited for those who have little experience with dog ownership.

Good with Kids: This is a suitable breed for kids and is known to be playful, energetic, and affectionate around them.  Labs tend to be more beneficial to children as service dogs compared to Labradoodles and Standard Poodles due to their more loving and affectionate personalities.

‚ÄčLabradoodle
A Labradoodle is a cross or hybrid between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. It is sometimes difficult to discern what characteristics your Labradoodles might grow up to have. Because of this, certain traits, such as hair, can come in a variety of ways such as wiry, soft, straight, wavy, or curly.

Low Maintenance:

Hair needs to be brushed to prevent matting.  Occasional trimming or stripping is needed, typically costing $100 every 2-3 months at a groomer.

Shedding Varies: In general Labradoodles shed less than Labs, however, unless a breeder has a solid understand of and is employing genetic testing regarding genetics that cause shedding, most Labradoodles will shed light to moderately.  However, the FURminator works amazingly well.  10 minutes a month keeps shedding to a minimum.  Labradoodles are recommended for owners who do not want to deal with hair in their cars and homes.  Ideal for people with allergies.  Many people loosely refer to Labradoodles as being"hypoallergenic", however, there is no dog that is hypoallergenic. However, Labradoodles tend to shed minimal dander and because they have hair, not fur, they usually do not shed or very minimally shed and the majority of people suffering from dog allergies are not allergic to Labradoodles.
